While the Trumpleprotest filed down Whitehall outside, in Trafalgar Studios Stuart Slade’s Black-Mirror-dark London-centric BU21 delivered six interconnected young Londoners’ reactions to a terrorist attack on the city from the burns victim to the white van man who got a book out of it.

An impressive transfer for Slade and Theatre 503 director Dan Pick, scripted with the driest of humour, some odd couplings, and at least two unexpected twists.  While a couple of the characters’ stories may seem predictable, he inserts just enough surprise into their journeys without undermining credibility, and subtly jerks the outcomes.

I’m not sure the audience felt licensed to laugh early enough in the proceedings, though – because I snorted at ‘I heard my mother had died, on Twitter’ and that was long before we got to the girl who hears ‘It’s Raining Men’ in her head as airplane seats full of dead passengers fall over Fulham.

Some smart breaking of the fourth wall, too, as the group extends the therapy session to reactions from the audience.

The writing is crisp, the ensemble work first rate – Graham O’Mara (excellent in Slade’s Cans at 503) gets under the skin of the van driver but it’s Alexander Forsyth who really stands out as the chippy coked-up city boy you’ll want to shag or punch.  Possibly both.
